The Kaleidoscope Side of Ceres Cabel: I Am A Certified Fan Girl (From Spice Girls to SHINee)

Almost all of us have our own favorite artists. But we cannot escape ourselves being a fan, and sometimes we wish that we will meet them soon or better that we will be their friends. I’m gonna share you on how I became a fan girl.

Boy bands and girl groups are very popular in the 90’s. That time I was a grade school student from University of Santo Tomas, seeing myself as one of the Spice Girls. Yes! I was a fan of Spice Girls. My favorite was Emma Bunton (a.k.a. Baby Spice). She’s so cute when I saw their music video “Wannabe”. I love their songs so much, either ballad or upbeat. One of my favorite songs is “Viva Forever”. I was so happy when they got reunited few years ago and released their singe “Headlines (Friendship Never Ends)” after Geri Halliwell (a.k.a. Ginger Spice) decided to go solo. Because of Spice Girls, I became a pop music addict.

Early 2000’s, a boy band named A1 called my attention. Their song “Living The Dream” is my most favorite. My favorite member is Ben Adams but I realized that I like Mark Read. I was so sad when they got disbanded around 2003.  After that, they released “A1: The Best Of” album, consists of all their hits from albums “Here We Come” to “Make It Good”. The songs “High & Dry” and “You’re Not In Love” are my favorites from that album. Few years after, Ben Adams joined Celebrity Big Brother in UK and ranked 5th placer. Last year, they released their latest album “Take Me Home” but without Paul Marazzi. I’m happy that A1 still lives on and continues singing upbeats and ballads under their label Columbia Records – Sony Music.

I was first year high school student in University of Santo Tomas Education High School (UST-EHS) when Sarah Geronimo won the singing competition “Star For A Night”. She was third year high school student at the same high school institution. Last 2003, our class president named Michael Lamaisri told me that I was going to represent our section for our acquaintance party and perform an intermission number. I wasn’t prepared because I hadn’t brought my minus-one, but he advised me to sing acapella instead. When the program had started, Sarah Geronimo, representing her section, first sang Lara Fabian’s “Broken Vow”. After few minutes, Michael called me and said, “You’re next.” I was so nervous that it’s my first time to sing onstage and entertain the audience. I sang “Stay” by Carol Banawa. When I finished the song, everyone applauded. I was so happy and because of that performance, I made myself very popular in EHS community, either ahead or beyond of me. I was nicknamed “The Next Sarah Geronimo of EHS”. I can’t believe that I see myself as Sarah Geronimo. She’s one of my favorite female artists in the Philippines. I had her albums from “Popstar: A Dream Come True” to “Just Me”. I still don’t have her concert DVDs and her latest albums “OPM” and “Music & Me”. Toni Gonzaga, Carol Banawa, and Juris are the other female Filipino artists that I also enjoyed listening to their songs.

Around 2003, ABS-CBN aired the Taiwanese idol drama “Meteor Garden”. F4 fever in Manila was on. That time, I enjoyed watching this drama, from the first episode until the finale of “Meteor Garden Season II”. I just wanted to watch their concerts “The Event” with Van Ness Wu and Ken Zhu and “Happy 50 TV” with Jerry Yan and Vic Zhou but I can’t because I had no enough money yet and I was sure that my parents wouldn’t allow me to go there. But being an F4 fan, I bought StarStudio magazines with F4 specials and their albums, even their solo albums (except Jerry’s and Van Ness’s, I just bought Vic’s and Ken’s). When F4 declined popularity, I’m not fond of watching their idol dramas. Because of F4, I love listening Mandarin pop music.

I had a crush on a young boy named Jesse McCartney a year after. He is famous in US with his released tracks “Beautiful Soul” and “She’s No You”. I bought his albums except his latest album “Departure”. The song “Because You Live” is my most favorite. I also bought two magazines about his autobiography. I found out that he has already a girlfriend named Katie Cassidy. But, on the other hand, I was glad that at least he’s happy. Taylor Swift, Demi Lovato, Selena Gomez, and Jonas Brother are also my favorite American artists.

Summer 2008 entered. I finished my freshman year at University of Santo Tomas College of Commerce and Business Administration when ABS-CBN aired the Taiwanese idol drama “Hana Kimi”. Fahrenheit members Wu Chun and Jiro Wang starred in this drama. I found out that Jiro Wang was first seen in drama “It Started With A Kiss” before “Hana Kimi”. Because of Wu Chun, I got interested with Fahrenheit. I quickly searched on Google about them, watched their other dramas, and bought all of their albums online. I spent more than PhP 3,000, including the freight cost just to complete my collection. When Wu Chun and Calvin Chen visited Philippines for Romantic Princess Philippine Promo Tour last July 2008, I wasn’t able to see and meet them in person because I had classes and I was sure that there were a lot of Filipino Fahrenheit fans who will go at the ABS-CBN, but I had a chance to watch them on TV. They appeared at “Entertainment Live”, “Pinoy Dream Academy Season 2 Gala Night”, “ASAP ’08”, and “The Buzz”. I also downloaded their best pictures, either individual or group. For the first time of my entire life, I registered as a member of Fahrenheit-Globa1 Forum and Fahrenheit Family Philippines. Because of Fahrenheit-Globa1 Forum, I was updated about what’s super hot and latest about them – dramas, shows, albums, endorsements, music videos, and songs. And also, I became the fourth administrator of FahrenheitFacts on Twitter. I never thought that it’s been more than four years that I still like and love this Taiwanese boy band. I WAS BEING IN LOVE WITH CALVIN CHEN. He’s my most favorite Fahrenheit member. I had completed all four albums in CD+DVD album versions. But when Wu Chun left Fahrenheit, my interest in them got lessen in updating what's latest about them. Now, I just read and like posts in our group page in Facebook on recent news about them. However, I wouldn't forget that I've become a fan of this handsome boyband from Taiwan.

I wasn't a pure K-Pop fan that time when I listen songs and watch MVs from Rain and BoA. I just liked them. When 2009 came, famous girl group from JYP Entertainment called Wonder Girls released their song "Nobody" and the large scale group from SM Town Entertainment called Super Junior went famous because of their song "Sorry Sorry". Then a lot of popular artists like FT Island, 4Minute, and U-Kiss visited the Philippines to promote their albums through mall tours and guest appearances in some shows on TV. The K-Pop fever went on fire when Super Junior set their first Manila concert named "Super Show 2". I didn't watch but I realized how K-Pop music is in demand until now. A lot of rookie groups introduced and knew because of MYX, the number 1 music channel in the country. When Super Junior released their song "Mr. Simple" and Girls' Generation released their song "The Boys", I wanted to play all over again and do the dance steps as I saw their MV on TV. Then the Mnet Asian Music Awards had simulcast airing in YouTube so I tried to watch it online and I was amazed with performances of popular Korean groups: Miss A, Trouble Maker (JS from Beast and HyunA from 4Minute), 2NE1, Girls' Generation, and Super Junior to name a few. Because of that, I became a K-Pop fan. Thus, I liked listening songs from several K-Pop artists such as 2NE1, CNBlue, and T-ara. When I searched on the internet, I found out that BoA, Super Junior, and Girls' Generation are from the same agency which is SM Town Entertainment, I started to download and tried to listen some popular hits from almost all SM Town artists until I liked the 5-member boyband SHINee, most especially their sexiest member, Kim Jonghyun. I highly anticipated their comeback last month titled Sherlock. Now, I like watching shows on KBS (Music Bank and Immortal Songs 2) and Arirang (Showbiz Korea and Pops In Seoul). Plus, I'm looking forward with the agency's latest projects: (1) movie titled "I Am" which featured behind-the-scenes and performances from SM Town Live in Madison Square Garden, New York to be released on May 10, (2) first leg of 2012 SM Town concert tour in Los Angeles, California, and (3) drama called "To The Beautiful You" starring SHINee's Minho and f(X)'s Sulli to be aired on SBS at the second half of the year.

From Spice Girls to SHINee – that’s my story. Whenever they were already gone or still existing in entertainment circle, the most important is their unforgettable songs and music videos that are being played almost every day. As a fan girl, those albums and other merchandises are worth expensive, but my happiness is still priceless.

The Best Tasting Milk Tea Drink Ever!

I had tasted several milk teas in the country during my school days as a Thomasian student. Some of the brands I've tasted were from Chowking, Happy Fanshu, and Zagu. Then last year, I heard that there was a brand that is the best tasting milk tea. The name is Happylemon. Unfortunately their branches were far away from our home, somewhat located around Eastwood, Greenbelt and Rockwell. Then recently, they opened their branch in TriNoMa. I've wanted to buy and try to taste it but I wasn't able to purchase at least one.

Then last week, I went to Rockwell for a job interview at Ateneo Professional Schools. After the interview, I entered at Powerplant Mall for the first time. I wanted to see what's inside of that mall. And indeed, it's full of expensive world-class brands like Zara, Calvin Klein, and Lacoste. Suddenly I saw Happylemon store inside and got excited. Finally, I bought milk tea with blank pearl sago for PhP 75.00 before I went home. I sipped and loved the taste. It's true. I love this drink and hope I can try to taste different kind of milk tea from Happylemon. Though it's expensive, it's very worth it for its unique taste. I think I would say that Happylemon is the best tasting milk tea I've ever tasted in my entire life.

A BUFFET OF LOVE: a story of how I like, get addicted, and love Love Buffet

May 2009. A press conference was held by GTV. The drama is called Love Buffet or Ai Si Bai Hui starring Joanne Zeng (aka Qiao Qiao), Calvin Chen, and Aaron Yan. I was so excited and they said that they will adapt the manga Parfait Tic by Nanamu Nanaji. It looks like the manga has interesting story between cousins who fell in love with the same girl. So I searched online manga sites to check of they have manga scans of Parfait Tic available. And indeed it has. While I was waiting for this drama to air, I had read first the manga in English.

Though it’s not yet complete, I continued reading this manga because I love the story and the characters. Shinpo Daiya is my most favorite character because while I was reading it, I imagined Calvin acting as Daiya.

Love Buffet had faced a lot of struggles. First one is the 88 Typhoon Murakot last August which many of the filming sets were destroyed by the typhoon; so the production and filming postponed. Two months after, there was news that Calvin and Qiao Qiao had rumored that they were in love because their pictures together has seen in internet sites. Three days before my birthday, Calvin posted a blog in Fahrenciti site regarding that issue. He explained that they were not dating; it’s just a gentleman’s gesture to escort Qiao Qiao in buying something in a store because it was raining. At least he first cleared that issue before Qiao Qiao also cleared the issue in her own Wretch blog. Then the drama also had replaced actors but at least they remained Aaron Yan and Calvin Chen to play the Shinpo cousins. Reen Yu replaced Qiao Qiao to play Fuuko Kameyama, Chen De Xiu of Dong Cheng Wei replaced Derrick He to play Isobe Satoshi, and Cynthia Wang replaced Tracy Zhou to play Akio-senpai. I was so happy that the drama pushed through. Unfortunately I had pity on Aaron and Calvin because they gonna reshot the drama that they had filmed before.

After a year and a half of waiting, finally the drama started airing last 19 December 2010. Two days prior that airing date, they released a pictorial book. I badly wanted that photobook. It’s ok for me if I decided not to buy Fahrenheit: The Beginning photobook; I’m happy and contented if I bought the Love Buffet pictorial book.

Also I was part of the Love Buffet Tagalog subbing team of Viki. The first half of the drama I subbed was a coincidence (as I say) because the assigned parts were my most awaited scenes. Example is Calvin’s bath scene: I was screaming when I watched this part online live stream. (You know why this is one of my favorite scenes.) The second half of the drama is the requested one. I asked the Tagalog moderator if she will assign me in the specific part that I want to sub. Example is Calvin and Reen’s first kissing scene on the street.

A week after Valentines Day, I called my best friend to meet me up at a fast food chain near my school to get the Love Buffet photobook. I paid PhP 450. Thanks to a friend of mine who informed me that she had Love Buffet photobooks. Finally, I already had this photobook. I’m happy. I carry this photobook wherever I go; so anytime I open this photobook, I always see Da Ye’s sunshine smile.

Now that this drama has come to its end, I felt sad but honestly this is my most favorite Taiwanese idol drama. If Xiao Feng has Da Ye in her life, I have Calvin Chen of my life. Even though the person I’m talking about is not the real Calvin but indeed he looks like Calvin, at least I understand that “feelings have to be accepted or rejected, you can’t always get what you want” and “love is like a buffet because of its 5 flavors: sweet, sour, bitter, salty, and spicy.”

I would like to thank the following who made Love Buffet possible:

  • Nanamu Nanaji – for her manga Parfait Tic that she drew and published. This manga has a nice story.
  • The diving force of this drama: director, producer, and screenwriters plus staff – for their hard work in adapting the manga to idol drama
  • The cast (most especially Xiu, Cynthia, Reen, Aaron, and Calvin) – for their effort in filming this drama and making it real.

I am not only a fan of Fahrenheit, but because of Love Buffet, I am also a fan of Reen Yu, Nanamu Nanaji, and this drama, of course. I will watch this drama all over again.

Bling bling! It's Kim Jonghyun!

“Bling bling is Jonghyun.” That’s one of the lines in SHINee’s song The SHINee World. Hmm… Actually that’s not the reason why I made him as my bias in this Korean boy group from SM Town Entertainment. It was because of their music video Hello. He’s very handsome in that MV but it wasn’t the first MV that I had seen from them. It was Ring Ding Dong. Their MVs (Hello, Ring Ding Dong, and Lucifer) were playing in MTV’s OK Karaoke then I enjoyed listening to their songs and seeing Jonghyun on TV.

I searched on the internet. And here’s a little information that I became more interested about him:
  • Korean name: Kim Jonghyun (김종현)
  • Stage name: Jonghyun (종현 or 鐘鉉)
  • Nick name: Bling Bling Jonghyun, Dino Jonghyun. Jjong, Jjongie. Jonghyunnie
  • Birth date: April 08, 1990
  • Blood type: AB
  • Height: 175 cm
  • Language: Korean, English, Mandarin
  • Position : Lead Vocal
  • Hobbies: Writing lyrics, listening to the music, singing and playing piano
  • Fan: Blingers

Wait! Blingers? I like that. So I am a blinger. :)

But I can’t believe that he had a girlfriend named Sung Se Kyung. I saw her pictures in Google. She’s not that pretty but she was lucky at that time. They both dated and had a nine-month relationship. I don’t know if Jonghyun has a current girlfriend or he’s still waiting for the right time to love again.

Today is his birthday. He’s turning 22. Well, he’s younger than me in 6 months. My birthday wish for him is continuous success in his career as an SM Entertainment artist and one of the handsome members of SHINee plus good health for him and his family. In addition, I hope he will find his girl who would love and care in the future.

F.R.I.E.N.D.S. From Past to Present

Schoolmates and classmates… I just met and knew them during school days. But after graduation, it seemed that they didn’t know me at all. They didn’t greet me and say hi along streets. I accepted them as my true friends. But in fact, they have fake faces. That’s why I was always alone.

I’ve become three-time sergeant-at-arms officer in primary classes and reached vice president in a high school organization; until I became college class president when I was in my third year. There were problems but some of them were solved through open forum and retreat. I forgave people who teased me and said negative words (several were below the belt) about me, both done directly and indirectly. Thank God that Twitter didn’t discover yet. But if it was discovered during my high school days, maybe I would be very controversial in terms of my personality and attitude towards them. Thus, I promise to myself that I wouldn’t attend any reunions from high school to college. I admit that high school wasn’t memorable but grade school was very meaningful.

They said high school was fun. For me, it wasn’t. Though I was popular for four years, I just took a risk in being friendly to my schoolmates. I played a role of a celebrity. It was cool that you have a lot of friends from freshmen to seniors, from four school years. The reason why I was famous in that time was my talent in singing and performing on stage. I received positive and negative comments from different people, even evil laughs from them. It’s true that you wouldn’t please anyone. So I just heard then ignored those negative and stayed positive. In the end, I continued performing on stage until I graduated. My purpose why I did that is I want to gain confidence on stage in front of many people who are watching me. The hardest part of my high school life was with my classmates. Though students didn’t shuffle, I mean the people who you’ve met in first year were the same people you’re with until graduation. I was often alone, no best friends and no group of friends. When there would be a group work, they wouldn’t accept me as their group mate. They said that I have no initiative. I was afraid that if I did the thing that was wrong, they would scold me. I cried that time. After graduation, they apologize for what they did. I was teary-eyed then forgave them though it’s hard to accept their late apologies.

College came. I met new friends, including an Indonesian and Korean classmates. Still, it was the same cycle. But this time, I was not popular in terms of performing onstage but some had known me because I was active in a number of organizations that I wanted to join. I became a student coordinator of our college student council in my sophomore year; then I became class president and class secretary in junior and senior years respectively. I joined a talent competition in my junior year and I received a score of 7 from three judges. Unfortunately I wasn’t a winner but at least I reached grand finals. Few of my classmates watched to support me. Two of them recorded my performance but when they played it in class few days after, I heard one who said the word “boo” a lot of time. That was not a support but that was an insult. After graduation, I didn’t mingle with them for the last time. I was disappointed. Though I expected that my college life would be more memorable than high school, it became worst.

In my junior year in college, I joined an international online forum. That time I almost gave up hope in meeting a person who would be my best friend. I didn’t expect that I would meet a girl who has a deep heart and understanding. Her name is Janella. I had no first impression on her but I had a strong feeling that we will become close friends. In fact, we’ve became best friends for almost two years. We call each other “Bessy”. We have a lot of similarities that’s why we’re perfect for each other as my best friend. I considered her as one of my sisters. Other girls who I also became my best friends were Gliselle, Aileene, Julie, and Therese.
Janella, Me, and Julie
Aileene, Therese, and Gliselle
If they were happy memories, they were bitter because of misunderstandings that turned into a big space. It happened exactly last year. I forgave her after she reached an average of at least 85% in first semester of her first year as my condition. Few months after, I observed her actions but still I was disappointed with what I’ve seen. It became worst when she went to my family residence without any alarm that she will drop by. I posted negative tweets in Twitter about what happened few hours ago. Before micro-blogging them, I made sure that no one from my followers’ list will react on my tweets by noting them to just ignore those. After that, I decided to cut our communication in all social media platforms. It was almost two months with no communication through phone message, calls, and social media but I know there would be a right time for us to talk face-to-face and forgive each other.

“Friends forever” and “friendship never ends” as they say. But I believe that “Know your true friends are” because I have true friends that I know they are always there for me. Best friends are my true friends that accept me who I am. They are very important in my life as I treasure them in my heart.
